ANALYSIS OF TENDENCIES OF WATER QUALITY CHANGE IN THE WESTERN BUG RIVER FOR A LONG PERIOD

 

Purpose - to analyze the dynamics of changes in the integral indicators of surface water quality in the Western Bug River within Ukraine.

Method. The analysis of changes in water quality in the Western Bug river was carried out using a system of classification of standards for the assessment of surface water quality in Ukraine. On the basis of common environmental criteria, the technique allows comparing water quality in selected sections of water objects, in water objects of different regions. The calculation of the environmental quality assessment of water was carried out within three blocks: a salt block unit, a trophic-saprobiological (ecological and sanitary) unit and a block of indicators for the content of specific toxic substances. The results are presented in the form of a combined environmental assessment, based on the final conclusions of the three blocks and consists in calculating the integral ecological index.

Results. Complex research on the change in the water quality in the West Bug River was conducted within the territory of Ukraine during the long-term period. The water quality of the river on the basis of the total values of the integral indicators of the quality of water of the three blocks corresponded to 2-6 categories of quality, from "very good", "clean" to "bad", "dirty" waters. The final ecological indexes (IE) for the worst of their values vary within the 2nd and 3rd grades of quality and are estimated from "good", "fairly clean" to "mediocre", "moderately polluted" waters. The dynamics of changes in the final values of integral indicators of surface water quality in the West Bank, according to their worst values, indicates: progressing their pollution with mineral substances; a significant increase in pollution by tropho-saprobiological components and a steady increase in pollution of surface water with toxic substances.

Scientific novelty. For the first time, on the basis of analytical studies and stock materials, an ecological assessment of the surface waters of the Western Bug river has been carried out for three blocks of indicators: salt composition, trophic-saprobiological and specific substances of toxic activity in the modern and retrospective period. The dynamics and trends of accumulation of pollutants in the surface waters of the Western Bug river are established.

Practical significance. The conducted studies allowed to analyze and evaluate the ecological state of the surface waters of the Western Bug River over a long period, which would allow the establishment of ecologically acceptable water quality standards and, on the basis of them, substantiate the system of recommendations aimed at improving the ecological status of the studied basin.
